Derek graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 2021. He worked as a research intern during his undergraduate studies in UNSW, where he learned to analyse ovarian histology in mice treated with chemotherapy. He has also worked on another project aimed to study the mechanisms of a novel synthetic mitochondrial uncoupler in treating metabolic disorders in a diabetic mouse model. He further completed an honours year in the laboratory for Ageing Research Group at UNSW Medicine, where he focused on testing the potential use of mitochondrial uncoupler to improve mitochondrial function during ageing, with the aim to alleviate age-related diseases and extend lifespan. He has also previously tested the therapeutic potential of the same compound in treating metabolic disorders in a diabetic mouse model.
He joined Stem Cell Medicine Group in 2023 as a research assistant to expand his research skills in stem cells and translational research. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis and drawing.
