Team CMRI use pedal power to raise money for cancer research

Great Cycle Challenge

Team CMRI finished the Great Cycle Challenge in fine form, surpassing all expectations to finish riding 3205km and raised $30,004!

Our team of 12 - including Director, Roger Reddel – finished third nationally on the leaderboard – a remarkable achievement

Team CMRI was just a small part of GCC in 2024 which saw 5817 riders ride the equivalent of 30 times around the Earth, clocking in 1,264,192km. It was truly inspiring to see a community of riders come together for the cause.

The team was thrilled to meet another super cyclist, Margaret Rowlings, during her visit to the Institute.

A true Great Cycle Challenge Champion, Margaret has been riding strong for 7 years! She began cycling in 2013 as a way to stay active after her breast cancer diagnosis.

Being a breast cancer survivor, she has rallied her regional community of Kyogle to get behind her over the years. 2024 has seen her highest fundraising effort to date, raising almost $12,000.

“A cancer diagnosis for anyone is a terrible shock, but when it comes to a small child the impact on the family is devastating,” said Margaret.

“Kyogle, meaning Big Bush Turkey in Bundjalung language, is a small regional country town in Northern Rivers also known as ‘The Gateway to the Rainforests’. Only this morning I heard it lovingly referred to as “The Town that keeps on giving”. This is no more obvious than in the manner in which my town has dug deep in response to my GCC Campaign this year,”

During her visit, Margaret was captivated by the tour of CMRI’s impressive ProCan lab, where she saw firsthand the impact of her incredible efforts.

Another remarkable achievement came from the 21 riders in Team Emily who pedaled an incredible 5524km and raised $90,393 in memory of GCC ambassador, Emily. Their efforts earned them the title of Number 1 Team—a beautiful tribute to a brave young woman taken far too soon.

Past GCC ambassador and cancer-fighting superstar, Ruby Walker, finished treatment for leukaemia earlier this year and was so excited to ride in GCC herself. Ruby rode 30km and raised $2626 to help other kids kick cancer's butt.
