They may have got drenched in the process, but our City2Surf runners were happy to have smashed their fundraising goal and raising more than $16,000 for our scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute.
In total we had 22 runners doing the 14km run through Sydney’s toughest hills including scientist Dr Kate Giles who raised an incredible $6637 on her own.
Kate, who is a cancer researcher, said she never imagined she would be able to exceed her fundraising goal.
“I ran City2 Surf because running clears my head, and crossing that finish line feels great, even if it was in pouring.
“It’s amazing that doing something simple for yourself, like going for a long run in the rain, can end up meaning a lot more when it connects you to a cause and a wonderful community of supporters.’’
Another CMRI runner, Sophia French, said it was amazing to see so many people joined together for one event, including many running for a charity.
“I found running in the rain quite exhilarating and even though we finished the run soaking wet, the atmosphere was still amazing. I'm very much looking forward to next year already!’’
Fellow CMRI runner Adam Chong said he felt proud to run in the CMRI singlet and to have so many people give him a thumb’s up.
“My second year of City2Surf proved to be more difficult than the last but no matter how hard it will continue to be for me, it will never be close to the challenges experienced by my family, friends and kids around the world impacted by genetic conditions. They mentally and spiritually pushed me through Heartbreak Hill.’’
