Running for research

Community

When 15-year-old Eshan Bhuiyan developed a passion for running and decided to enter his first fun run – he knew it was the perfect opportunity to fundraise for the research done by his sister-in-law at Children's Medical Research Institute.

Eshan started out running as a fantastic way to keep fit and take a break from his studies at selective school, Baulkham Hills High School. He started out doing 5km Park Run events but soon set himself a new challenge of doing the 14km City to Surf in Sydney.

“I’ve been doing 4-5km runs a few times a week and I’ve been working up to 10km as a I find it more satisfying,’’ Eshan said. “Then I decided to do the City to Surf.’’

Eshan’s sister-in-law Shabita Rahman is a scientist at CMRI.

“CMRI had put up posters saying you could do the City2Surf as a fundraiser,’’ Shabita said. “Eshan was always updating me on his running PBs, and I said to him – you could run the City2Surf and fundraise for our research.

“He’s always shown a lot of interest in my job and he’s a great supporter of my research and as soon as I mentioned it, he signed up.

“He said he thought it was a great opportunity to help kids who were less fortunate than him.’’

Eshan said he was shocked to have raised $800 soon after signing up and sharing his fundraising page with family and friends. He is now hoping to raise even more as he keeps training for the August event.
