It was originally designed as a creative fundraising initiative, but decades later Jeans for Genes Day has become a way for the Australian public to rally behind medical research and show their support for children living with genetic conditions – which they did in a huge way in 2025!
This year’s Jeans for Genes Day, held on 7th August, turned out to be one of the most successful. Together we raised more than $2.5m for the work being done in the labs at Children’s Medical Research Institute and the funds are still rolling in.
Families of kids living with genetic conditions held sporting events, formal dinners, denim days at their schools, bake sales and the wider community organised everything from line dancing to burpee challenges to show their support.

Our volunteers who hit the streets were faced with rain in many locations, including our scientists who always love to work at merchandise stalls and collect donations.
Researcher Imogen Astruc said being on the ground was an honour and a privilege.
“Stepping out of the lab to experience the dedication of volunteers and contributions from the public brings into focus how we achieve cures and treatments for children together, as a community,’’ she said.
“Jeans for Genes Day is so wonderfully received by the wider community that many people I speak to are familiar with us, so it makes fundraising a blast to represent something like that.
“I love answering questions about what we do with volunteers and the public. We all know the “why” of Jeans for Genes Day, which is of course the kids! I like to bring a little bit of ‘what happens now’ to the table and share is with others.’’

Jeans for Genes Campaign Manager Greg Noel-Butterworth said the greatest part of the day was the opportunity to show the CMRI scientists, how much their work is valued.
“We’re all so proud to support these scientists - this campaign is for them,’’ he said. “We will continue to do all we can to help advance the life-changing work they do every day.’’
If you haven’t had a chance to donate, bank funds or organise your own event – there is still plenty of time. You can also show your support by visiting one of our Retail Alliance partners such as Lowes, Williams, The Trybe, Mathers, Seed, JAG, kikki-K, Fine-Day, allkinds, Commonry and Unison as well as small business Little You.
