Discovery Days are back

Community

The doors were opened and the labs were filled with inquisitive minds for CMRI’s first Discovery Day in almost a year!

Discovery Day is a regular event held at CMRI where members of the community are invited in to tour our labs, meet our scientists, learn about what we do – and enjoy a wonderful lunch!

It is hosted by CMRI’s Community Relations Manager, Jennifer Philps, who has dearly missed inviting visitors into our labs during the pandemic and was overwhelmed with excitement for our first event held in March. The first group were from The Probus Club of Bella Vista.

“We were so excited, they were so excited,’’ Jennifer said. “They all said it was so engaging and informative.’’

Scientist Fidelle Karam is from the Eye Genetics team and was one of the guides. She said she is always amazed by how interested people are in her work.

“I love that people enjoy learning about our work,’’ she said. “They were really curious about my own journey in science, and why I was researching genetic retinal disease. They also enjoyed sharing their personal experiences with retinal disease.

“They were very avid listeners, and inquisitive, and very much interacted with what I shared with them, from the history of CMRI to Robyn’s lab and my own journey.’’
