We would like to congratulate our Director, Professor Roger Reddel AO, on his receipt of an Order of Australia award on Australia Day, 26 January 2021 “for distinguished service to biomedical research in the field of adult and childhood cancer and genetics, and to tertiary education.”

Professor Reddel has been the Executive Director of Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI), Westmead, since 2007. He wears many hats, and has also been: Head of CMRI’s Cancer Research Unit since 1988; Director, CellBank Australia, since 2005; Co-Director of ProCan since 2016; and the University of Sydney Sir Lorimer Dods Professor, Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney, since 2007.

He has been a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences from 2017; a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science from 2010; a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians from 1985; a Senior Principal Research Fellow, National Health and Medical Research Council, 2004-2007; a C J Martin Fellow, National Health and Medical Research Council, 1984-1986; and Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow, 1984-1985. In addition to his focus on research, he has been a registered Medical Practitioner since 1977.

Professor Reddel has often been recognised for his dedication to cancer research. He has been a Cancer Council NSW Bicentennial Fellow, receiving the Carcinogenesis Fellowship for 10 years. As well as Program Grants for 10 years. Other awards and recognition include:

  • Neil Hamilton Fairley Medal, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, 2017.
  • Premier's Award for Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year, 2011.
  • Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research, 2007.
  • Award for Vocational Excellence, Rotary International, 2003.
  • Bushell Travelling Fellowship, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, 1984
  • Harry J Clayton Memorial Prize for Medicine and Clinical Medicine, University of Sydney, 1976.
  • Harold John Ritchie Memorial Prize (shared) for Medicine, University of Sydney 1976.
  • Cedric Swanton Memorial Prize for Psychiatry (shared), University of Sydney 1975.
  • H.G. Chapman Prize for Research in Biochemistry, University of Sydney, 1975.
  • Peter Bancroft Prize (shared), for best Undergraduate or Postgraduate research in Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney, 1974

His many services to the scientific community include:

  • Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) Chair, Medical Research Advisory Committee, since 2018 (Member, since 2012).
  • Chair, Westmead Research Hub Executive, since 2020, member of Council since 2006.
  • Board Member, Luminesce Alliance (formerly known as Paediatrio), since 2017.
  • Member, Governing Council, Sydney Health Partners, and Cancer Theme Lead, since 2016.
  • Member, Steering Committee, University of Sydney Cancer Research Network, since 2013.
  • Member of Executive and Council, Kids' Cancer Alliance, since 2011.
  • Member, Medical Grants Advisory Committee, Cure Cancer Australia Foundation, since 1998.

Professor Reddel is also the author of more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters published in various journals including: Nature; Nature Structural and Molecular Biology; Nature Genetics; Nature Biotechnology; and Science.
